Social Activities Volunteer

Organisation Description:

This organisation operates the Peace House, which is located near a refugee reception centre (camp). Volunteers work under an agreement with a secular support agency that is contracted by the German government to provide social services to refugees accommodated at a number of camps throughout the country. They are secular in nature and do not permit overt witnessing inside the camp premises.

Job Description:

The candidate will support paid staff inside the camp to boost the engagement of refugees in the services on offer. Additionally, they will support the operation of the Peace House. Examples of services are a sewing centre, exercise gym, bicycle repair shop, beauty and hairdressing, health and wellbeing, children’s activities, sports, etc. Activities are provided inside the reception centre (camp) where the refugees live. It is a secure environment. Work hours are flexible.

Person Description

Important qualities are enthusiasm, friendliness, and joy; men and women who are not afraid to engage with people from a variety of nationalities and languages are needed. Some cross-cultural experience would be beneficial, and an ability to communicate in another language, especially German, Farsi, Arabic, Turkish, Kurdish or Russian, would be a huge advantage. The candidate must be flexible and able to respond to the needs of the host organisation, which are in turn motivated by the needs of the refugees. Although the candidate may be supplementing an existing service, they must be a self-starter and able to work alone. There is scope to develop new services according to need and in consultation with camp management. Job ID – 1839
