Anaesthetist

This is a development project situated in a rural area. It has a training school for midwives, nurses and community workers, a community development work, a research hub, an English-speaking school up to age 16, and a 150-bed hospital (with obstetric, gynaecology, surgical, medical and paediatric departments).

The project is seeking a qualified anaesthetist (consultant/attending or senior trainee) to support the team of non-medical anaesthetists here. The anaesthetic team consists of 1 senior nurse anaesthetist (trained by visiting foreigners over the years), 2 medical assistant anaesthetists and several nurses. The hospital has 3 operating theatres, one for mainly general/gynaecology, one for obstetrics and one for small procedures and endoscopies. Most of the caseload is obstetrics (with many high risk cases), gynae and general surgery. There are 3600 deliveries per year, with a 20% Caesarean section rate. We occasionally operate on neonates, as well as all other age groups.

There is a need for a physician anaesthetist to expand the teaching of the newer anaesthesia nurses, to improve the skills of existing nurses, to help manage complex patients within a limited resource setting and to maintain resuscitation skills.
